The apostle Paul draws from the rich imagery of the footraces of ancient Israel, Greece, and the amphitheaters of Rome when he writes, “Since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us”(Hebrews 12:1).
These words were penned to encourage and challenge us all to persevere in our faith. The “race” referenced, is the Christian life. It’s a marathon, not a sprint, and we are called to stay the course and remain faithful to the end.
